Consumers Tell Walmart: No Caged Eggs in Mexico!

March 31, 2017

March 30, 2017: Serenaded by the sounds of a traditional mariachi band, advocates for laying hens delivered a massive petition to Walmart's Mexico City headquarters as part of a larger awareness-building demonstration. The petition, which includes over 125 thousand signatures and required four large boxes to hold it, demands that the company extend its policy to source only cage-free eggs, which it has already committed to do in the U.S., Canada and the U.K.

"We are pressing for the same treatment of hens in Mexico," explains Ana Ortega, managing director for The Humane League. "Double standards for chickens and Mexican consumers is unacceptable."

A Walmart executive requested a meeting with Ortega after the petitions were delivered.

Today's action of The Humane League and Mercy for Animals builds on continued efforts to pressure Walmart to extend its cage-free policy. There have been multiple demonstrations in Mexico and the U.S., and these will continue until the company addresses this cruelty in its egg supply.

You can help us convince Walmart to change its cruel policy in Mexico.

  • Call Walmart's customer service line: 1-800-925-6278, press 2 (customer), 2 (store experience), and then 1 (to speak to a representative), and tell Walmart that you don't support keeping laying hens in cages.

Together, we can create meaningful change for chickens trapped in Walmart's supply chain.
