Victory! World's Largest Bakery to Stop Caging Hens for Eggs
The Humane League opened our first internationally-based campaigns office in Mexico just eight months ago. Since then, I have been working with Aaron Ross, The Humane League's Director of Campaigns, to start dialogue with Mexican fast food chains, bakeries, and dining service companies about what they can do to help reduce animal suffering.
Like in the United States, our efforts have focused especially on cage cruelty to egg-laying hens. These hens suffer in ways that set battery cages apart as one of the cruelest forms of modern farming:
- rubbing their feathers off from constant contact with cage bars;
- living in their own feces and the feces of other birds;
- frequent foot deformities from wire mesh flooring;
- denial of basic behaviors: nesting, dust bathing, and perching.
That is why I am proud to announce that Grupo Bimbo—the largest baking company on the planet—has committed to completely eliminating the abusive practice of confining hens to cages throughout its egg supply chain by 2025. This commitment does not just take effect in Mexico, but worldwide! In the United States, you may recognize such Bimbo brands as Entenmann's, Sara Lee, Arnold, Nature's Harvest, and Thomas'. As a result of The Humane League's tireless efforts in Mexico, millions of animals across the world will no longer be confined to cruel cages.
As The Humane League's Mexico Campaign Manager, I've known from the start that our new office would result in exciting changes for animals in my country. What I didn't know was that an unprecedented victory was so close. Having this commitment from Grupo Bimbo, the largest purchaser of eggs in Mexico, will help us in our talks with other major producers, restaurant chains and dining service providers in the area.
We will never give up our fight for a world where all animals are treated with respect and compassion. I can't wait to give you an update when the next company makes its commitment. Stay tuned!
Please consider supporting this vital work for animals—any donations made in December will be tripled by a generous donor.
