Victories! Food Lion and Safeway Ditch Cages

More Supermarkets Join Cage Boycott
March 02, 2016

It is barely March and our campaign to eradicate battery cages throughout the retail industry is quickly gaining steam. We have already seen cage-free announcements from CVS, Target and Trader Joe's, received cage-free commitments from Giant and Stop & Shop, and worked with BJ's Wholesale Club to eliminate cages. Now, two more major supermarket corporations have joined the cage boycott: Albertsons and Delhaize.

Yesterday, Albertsons Companies Inc, the country's second largest supermarket and owner of Safeway, pledged to phase out cages by 2025. The announcement follows a campaign from Mercy For Animals and The Humane League.

Today, Delhaize America, owner of supermarket chains Food Lion and Hannaford, has just announced that it will eliminate cages throughout its entire egg supply chain by 2025. The move comes after dialogue with The Humane League and other animal protection groups.

These two mammoth announcements illuminate the fact the largest supermarket in the country, Kroger, has yet to end its support of cages. Please visit Kroger's Facebook page and tell them to join the myriad companies producing timelines to go cage-free!
