The Largest Canadian Restaurant Group Ditches Cages!
After hearing from The Humane League and other animal protection organizations, Cara Operations Ltd.—the largest restaurant group in Canada—is the latest company to produce a firm timeline to end its support of abusive cage egg farms. Cara has announced that many of its brands will begin sourcing exclusively cage-free eggs as early as the end of 2016 and all Cara brands will source exclusively cage-free eggs by 2020.
Cara—operator of restaurant chains such as Swiss Chalet, Harvey's, Milestones, Montana's, Kelsey's, East Side Mario's, Casey's, New York Fries, Prime Pubs, Bier Markt and Landing restaurants—represents over 1,000 individual locations.
This decision follows similar announcements from several major chains that have a large presence in Canada, including McDonald's, Tim Horton's, Burger King, Wendy's, Subway, and Quiznos and signals to the egg industry that the cages used in egg production are rapidly becoming a relic.
The Humane League will continue to work with other major Canadian food companies to follow Cara's lead and eliminate cages from their supply chains once and for all.
