Join The Humane League in celebrating 2016’s first quarter!

April 22, 2016

This year has delivered some of The Humane League's greatest successes in history. In the past few months, we have enjoyed monumental campaign victories, reached countless college students nationwide through grassroots efforts, and impacted millions of Facebook users through our international ads.

Following our victories in 2015, we embarked on ourmost ambitious corporate campaigns to date. In February, The Humane League launched an aggressive national campaign against the largest grocer in the country, Kroger. Along with our tried and true methods of sophisticated online campaigning and grassroots activism, we placed bench ads outside of Kroger's headquarters in Cincinnati. Our relentless efforts resulted in a policy from the grocer that will free 20 million hens from cages. The first quarter saw similar commitments from other enormous grocers - including Target, BJ's Wholesale Club, Aldi and Ahold USA - which will affect more than 40 million additional hens.

Earlier this year, our interactions to secure a cage-free commitment from Denny's, one of the largest egg users in the restaurant industry, will improve the lives of 1.5 million hens per year. This announcement played a critical role in influencing similar commitments from other major breakfast chains, like IHOP, Cracker Barrel, Golden Corral and more. In addition, The Humane League's growing network of grassroots supporters in Mexico were able to encourage Burger King's parent company, Restaurant Brands International, to produce a policy from to transition to source cage-free eggs within the next 10 years. This decision has given us the momentum to call upon Mexico's other restaurants and food service providers to do the same.

The Humane League's grassroots offices are centrally located in 11 cities throughout the United States, including Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Dallas, D.C., Denver, Philadelphia, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle and South Florida. The hard work of staff members and volunteers in those cities are reflected in Q1's numbers. Along with the help of some of the local campus organizers, grassroots outreach distributed 202,474 veg eating booklets and 38,956 vegetarian starter guides in just three months. The same grassroots staff reached 2,922 individuals with Humane Education presentations and another 904 students with pay-per-view video. The team has also helped 6,202 students pledge to participate in Meatless Mondays. If you are interested in joining The Humane League as a Grassroots Outreach intern, please apply here.

The Humane League's campus outreach program grew to include 30 schools during the first quarter. Students involved with the program have dedicated their time to educating the masses on plant-based lifestyles and factory farming by publishing a total of 31 op-eds, distributing 852 pull-tab posters, and founding campus VegClubs at various institutions, including University of Nebraska - Omaha, Michigan State University, Boise State University, and Northern Arizona University. These students also leaflet and distribute veg starter guides along with The Humane League's Grassroots Outreach team. We are continuing to actively recruit and train the next generation of effective animal advocates on college campuses across the country!
